Rheinfels is another impressive castle on the Rhine, but unlike Marksburg, all visitors see here are ruins. They are spectacular though, and well worth a detour if you’re near St Goar. Once the mightiest of Rhine fortresses, Rheinfels was built in 1245 by a German count and given a Renaissance makeover during the 15th Century.
We drove round The Rhine (which is gorgeous in its own right) and made it to the famous Marksburg Castle. Along the way, you can already see how magnificent this undefeated castle from miles off. It does not disappoint. I loved its simplicity and generous history.
You can explore the outer ring around the toilets, cafe and shop on your own but you have to buy a guided tour ticket to get in. This is because the castle is not completely furnished for tourists due to its age and that the management family still live on site.
Original decors and items found on site during renovations are on display. The tour guides are friendly but I think there are limited tours for free travellers as there was only one English tour on the day. Worms 2d. If you drive, it is 2€ for parking at the foot of the castle. Be careful of the steep hill! The cafe offers a range of hot food and drinks.
The cakes were lovely. The scenery is wonderful and you can take photos throughout the tour. I recommend being quick with this as you don't stay long in one place! The best location for view and photos is the garden. Be sure to make the most of your 3mins! If you travel to The Rhine, this is a must do!
