The 2014 Chicago Auto Show 'concept' uses a 2.8-liter diesel four-pot, but it differs greatly from other engines of the same displacement currently being used and tested by Cummins.READ THIS:Outside the US, Cummins offers a 2.8-liter ISF diesel for use in a wide range of work vehicles (including cab-over trucks in Asia), and inside the US, the Atlas 2.8-liter diesel is a conceptual project funded by both Cummins and the Department of Energy; it's designed to test engine technologies 'further out on the radar.' Somewhere in between the existing ISF and the future Atlas engines sits the engine found under the hood of the Nissan Frontier concept, which is simply known as the Cummins 2.8 Turbo Diesel.

Making matters even more confusing, all three of these 2.8s are completely different beasts from the. 'Nissan'Although Cummins didn't go as far as to reveal specific similarities or differences between the Frontier's diesel and the other 2.8-liter engines, it did say that the fuel system, air flow, and turbochargers have been changed to 'clean up the engine from an emissions standpoint.' Cummins reps did point out that while this engine is only one of two in existence currently being tested, it's ready to go for production. The company is just 'waiting for a partner' to bring it to market. Nissan is using the diesel Frontier to judge market interest for this application, but no production plans have been announced. Final power figures have yet to be revealed, but initial estimates have the engine producing around 200 hp and more than 350 lb-ft of torque.
